Practicing since 2002, Trey’s work experience sets him apart from most attorneys. Trey has worked in all three disciplines of law: transactional, litigation and appellate law. In his first year, Trey worked on criminal and civil cases for the Honorable Justice Terry Jennings on the First Court of Appeals as a briefing attorney in Houston, TX. Trey then worked as a civil litigator for Mehaffy Weber PC in Houston, TX, defending clients in court and in over 200 depositions.
A decision to go back to law school and get his master of laws (LL.M.) degree in taxation took Trey away to Florida for an intense year of study. With his new expertise, Trey moved back to San Antonio and joined well known Cox Smith Matthews. Here, Trey was able to apply his tax knowledge to complex issues and make a practical impact for businesses and individuals, working closely with the corporate, bankruptcy and estate planning departments.
With a goal of building a tax and business consulting practice, Trey joined the venerable accounting firm Padgett Stratemann, assisting their accountants with hundreds of tax matters and issues. It was here that Trey won a case in U.S. Tax Court with his co-counsel in a rare regular full opinion issued by the Court - Gregory v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue, 149 T.C. No. 2. After a merger with the worldwide accounting firm of RSM, Trey further honed his expertise in tax exempt organization and executive compensation matters.
It was finally time to take all of his experience and set out to assist clients directly by opening his own firm. Trey believes his multidisciplinarian experience with expertise in taxation allows him to serve and counsel clients in ways other attorneys simply cannot.
On a personal side, Trey is a native of Austin, TX and has been a resident of San Antonio, TX for almost 20 years. His Texas relatives emigrated from the Westphalia region of Germany in the early 1850s to Yorktown, TX, where his father’s family continues to farm and ranch the land. He also spent many years close to his mother’s family in Kentucky, Tennessee and the Carolinas and they remain an important part of his life.
He is married to Robin and they have a young son that is hard to keep up with. He enjoys time with family and friends, baseball, history, hunting & fishing, traveling and classic film. Trey serves his community through the San Antonio Conservation Society, Albert Pike Masonic Lodge No. 1169, and as a member of his church. He is also a member of the Krewe of Bacchus in New Orleans, LA.
